Hi all,

First of all, I would like to congratulate you in getting accepted to NUI Maynooth/ St. Patrick’s College Maynooth. As a student here for the last three years I have to assure you that Maynooth is one of the most welcoming places I have experienced. During your first few weeks in college it is natural to feel lost and overwhelmed, but there is help around every corner. Eventually you will find your way to your lectures, the library and of course our student bar here. For many of you this will be your first time away from home and this will be an incredible transition as not only will you go out and about to meet new friends, but you must also be responsible and learn to look after yourselves. I remember my first day in Maynooth (back in 06!) when I was on my own and really nervous going in for orientation. During the week, I quickly learned that everyone was in the same boat as me. So don’t worry if you are sitting beside someone you don’t know in a lecture theatre or at registration; just talk to them! Use this time to meet people, as everyone is feeling the same as you.

We are in tough times at the moment with the reintroduction of fees on the way and planned cuts to the educational system;but still the vibrant student life here in Maynooth lives on. Never before has the Students Union been needed so much to provide representation and advice to our fellow students.

Don’t forget to go to the Main Sports Hall on Clubs & Socs Day where you can join all sorts of clubs and societies. This is always a great colourful and energetic day and it’s a chance to get involved. Here you will meet loads of new people that share the same interests as you, or else you can sign up to something new that you’ve never tried before. “The Maynooth Experience” is what you make of it and my advice for everyone is to get involved!

Don’t get too stressed and remember if you feel worried or unsure about anything; don’t be afraid to call over to us and we will help you out to the best of our ability, or put you in contact with someone better informed than ourselves. Make sure to check out our great list of events which are coming up during Fresher’s Week and make yourself home in our Student Centre. Unlike many other colleges; NUI Maynooth has it’s own bar and venue. Remember that every bit of profit we make here goes back into student services. As well as this, the entertainment in our bar caters four our students so let us know what you want, and we’ll do our best to get that for you. The Students Union is an organisation run by students for students. We are there to help in any way possible. Don’t forget that we were elected to represent you so call over and talk to us, were there to help.

So get involved, get active and soak up the Maynooth Experience!

Yours sincerely,

Brian Murphy
