Your Union
What is the Union and how does it work?
First and foremost, I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself “What is a Students’ Union?” The answer is simple; it’s you. When you pay your registration fee, a percentage of that goes towards running a body that looks out for all students. It makes sure the lecturers are treating you fairly, it makes sure that if you have any problems they’re looked after to the best of our ability and it keeps you entertained with events all week long. That’s it simply. Of course there’s more to it than that so lets go through it step by step
1. You: All students are members of the Students’ Union and you can get as involved as you like, whether that’s very little or a lot. It’s completely up to you.
2. Class Reps: If you want to make sure your class is being looked after, why not become a class rep? You’ll go to one meeting per month (Union Council) where you get to decide the direction of the Union and how students are represented on a local and national level. You’ll
make sure that your class has a fair say and you’ll let them know that they’re being represented. All it takes is a few minutes to fill out a form and gather a few signatures.
3. The Executive: If you really want to get involved, the best step is to run for a position on
the Exec. This is a group of students who were elected to represent all Maynooth students in various different fields; some of whom have taken a year out of their studies to work full time for the students, and some who are juggling their position with their college work. You’ll get to meet this year’s Exec in a few pages time and find out a little about their positions and who they are. If this sounds like your idea of a good time and you are a first year, why not run for First Year Rep in early October? This will put you on the Executive Committee and will help make sure that the voice of First Years is heard and that their needs are being met.
